Michel Architects is a Los Angeles-based design practice dedicated to crafting modern residences that seamlessly integrate refined aesthetics, functional living, and a deep connection to the natural environment. Led by Rob Michel, the firm is defined by its thoughtful approach to design, emphasizing timeless simplicity, material integrity, and a seamless relationship between architecture and landscape.
Our process is rooted in exploration and collaboration, guided by a meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to creating homes that respond to their unique context. From initial concept to final execution, we strive to balance precision with warmth, ensuring each project enhances the lives of its inhabitants while celebrating the character of its surroundings.
With over a decade of experience, Michel Architects approaches every project with an unwavering focus on quality and craftsmanship. We prioritize open communication with clients, consultants, and builders, fostering strong partnerships that allow us to bring a shared vision to life.
We welcome opportunities to design residences that elevate modern living, combining clarity of vision with a timeless sense of place.
Our work begins with the realities of a place: topography, orientation, climate, vegetation, access, and views. We are interested in architecture that feels grounded in its site—buildings shaped by land, light, and use rather than imposed upon them.
We are equally drawn to the life of existing buildings. In preservation work, our focus is not replication for its own sake, but careful continuity: understanding the original logic of a house, protecting what is essential, and making new interventions feel structurally, materially, and architecturally coherent.
Across all of our work, we value restraint, permanence, and material integrity. We are drawn to materials that age well, hold depth, and register time honestly. The goal is not novelty, but work that gains character through use and endures both visually and physically.
Services
Architecture (CAB Lic. C-37961)
— Custom residential architecture from feasibility and pre-design through permitting, construction documents, and construction administration.
Design-Build (CSLB Lic. 1148217)
— Architect-led design-build services, providing a single source for design and construction. By maintaining authority through construction, we eliminate the friction between architect and builder — ensuring that what gets drawn is what gets built, with a team familiar with the material precision and detail resolution that define our work. One point of accountability, tighter coordination, and a smoother path from concept to occupancy.
Landscape Design
— Site planning, hardscape, planting concepts, and the integration of outdoor living environments with the architecture.
Historic Preservation
— Preservation planning, condition assessment, material-sensitive restoration, and coordination for architecturally significant properties.
Interiors
— Interior architecture, finish selection, millwork design, fixture specification, and coordination of the home’s material and spatial character.
How We Work
Our process is shaped by the belief that good residential design is both experiential and highly resolved. We begin with the realities of the site and the patterns of daily life, then develop each project through careful coordination, clear documentation, and close involvement through construction. The goal is not only a compelling design, but a home that feels coherent, enduring, and well considered at every scale.
